A few myths debunked:-

20mph zones don't necessarily mean speed bumps. By making 20mph the default speed limit on residential streets - we are not talking about busy main routes
here - you introduce a calmer driving culture for everyone. Then you can look at putting in traffic calming in the areas where it's really needed, instead of blanket covering an area.

Roads are for everyone, not just for cars. Lowering speeds is a better option than blocking off roads and forcing all traffic onto main roads.

Roads are paid for out of general taxation, not just by drivers. If motorists paid their way they would have to pay approximately an additional £1,000 a year.

20mph default speeds make practically no difference to average journey times in cities - in fact they ease congestion by discouraging people from roaring from one traffic jam to the next.

To my mind this is the key statistic (ref ROSPA -
http://www.rospa.com/roadsafety/toptentips/index.htm)

Hit by a car at 20 mph, 1 out of 40 pedestrian will be killed
97% will survive

Hit by a car at 30 mph, 2 out of 10 pedestrians will be killed
80% will survive

Hit by a car at 35 mph, 5 out of 10 pedestrians will be killed
50% will survive

Hit by a car at 40 mph, 9 out of 10 pedestrians will be killed
10% will survive

So is your need to get there 5 minutes earlier really worth someone's life?
