Community Assembly (south), 10th June

The next meeting of the South community Assembly  , which covers the four wards of Gleadless Valley, Graves Park, Beauchief and Greenhill and Nether Edge, is on Thursday 10 June 2010 – 6.30pm at Common Ground, St Peter’s Church, Empire Road, Sheffield, Nether Edge.

Is anyone who lives in these wards able to get along and make the case for a default 20mph limit on residential streets in the area? You will need to put a question in advance,
by emailing communityassemblysouth@sheffield.gov.uk or through your local councillor.
Please let the group know if you can attend – we can help with an appropriate question. As you will recall the Lib Dem council have supposedly passed responsibility for implementing 20mph zones down to the community assemblies, although people who attended the Northern Assembly tell us that the councillors there hadn’t heard the news!

The day I hit a child at 20mph – article originally from the Independent

A very sobering read.

Discussion in the Guardian – do lower speed limits cause higher levels of pollution.

The green debate in the Guardian is “do 20mph speed limits increase levels of pollution.”

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/apr/19/ask-leo-20mph-speed-limits-pollution

Some informed responses to the question which we will leave you to browse through.

Two key factors to consider are,

Lower residential speed limits will encourage more walking and cycling for many of the short journeys currently done by car.

20mph limits without traffic calming mean less acceleration and deceleration and encourage a smoother driving style.  Average speeds in our cities are less than 20 mph, with a stop start / style of driving that does nothing to help fuel consumption.

Sheffield on the Move forum – update

Rod gave an excellent presentation at the Sheffield on the Move forum on Thursday night.  We hope to have a copy for the website soon.

An informal vote at the end showed overwhelming levels of support for 20′s plenty. Hopefully this will give the council some encouragement, although we are concerned about their decision to farm the implementation out to local community assemblies  - we will think 20mph should be implemented on a citywide basis, not area by area.

We will pursue them on  this point, along with our allies in the Green Party.
